WHY MARKET TO ASIANS IN SEATTLE

Are you thinking to market to Asians? First, consider this: Asian is the second largest ethnic group in Seattle (14%) according to the 2010 census, of which at least 200,000 were Chinese.

Other than Asian Americans who have been living in the area for generations, the technology bloom of the greater Seattle area has attracted many ambitious Asian entrepreneurs, investors, and skilled professionals.

Chinese Americans in Washington State are very involved in the community—some representations are the Former Governor of Washington State Gary Locke and Former Mayor of Bellevue Conrad Lee.

FAST-GROWING ASIAN POPULATION IN SEATTLE

WeChat official account @meetseattle reports that Mainland Chinese has ranked Seattle the #1 City in the US for Chinese because of home prices, school rankings, green environment, and racial integration.

After the movie Beijing Meets Seattle (2013), known in the US as Findng Mr. Right, Seattle had been seeing a huge surge of Chinese immigration.

THE INFLUX OF CHINESE IMMIGRANTS WITH TREMENDOUS BUYING POWER

Many businesses realized there are unprecedented opportunities if they can effectively market to Asians. Asians have tremendous buying power, have social shopping habits, and their communities are tightly connected. The even better news is, Asians are rather easy for local businesses and organizations to reach at reasonable budgets.

MARKET TO ASIANS ON THE INTERNET

Wonder why there are so many Asian mommy bloggers and Asian Youtube personalities? Asians are under-represented in American mainstream media, so they go online for relevant content. As a result, Asian Americans are more active and attached to the Internet than any other groups.

MARKET TO ASIANS THROUGH PRINT MEDIA

Asians in America who are able to read in Chinese are extremely likely to read any Chinese characters present in their environment. Businesses can leverage this to market to Asians by providing translated materials and using relevant Chinese characters in their marketing materials that are meant for Chinese-reading audience.

CHALLENGES

Some businesses do not have the means and know-hows to reach their Asian audience; some go very aggressive—translated materials, sumo-ink stroked fonts, and adding Asian-looking models in their photography.

We have seen many well-meant attempts that involve irrelevant, or even offensive contents. It’s been shown 27% of Asian Americans feel that many as targeting them are offensive.

Our Story

If you have gotten our business card or looked at our website long enough, you might have seen this graphic a few times. Ron made this graphic in 2008, indicating with a red label where rauDesign was located–Benham Gallery in downtown Seattle. The owner of the Gallery, Marita Holdaway, helped Ron started the business and we are very grateful for that.

rauDesign had evolved throughout the decade, but little had changed to the graphic–and we will continue to keep it because we are grateful. We are also grateful for all our customers’ and partners’ continuous support. Thank you for your interest and we look forward to collaborating with you!
